Propagating Plants at Stony Oasis Farms: My Future Food-Forest

Growing More Plants Every Year at Stony Oasis

I am all about propagating plants, and growing trees at Stony Oasis. I am building a food-forest, and I am not doing this to supply myself with food only...I want to grow enough food for 100's of people. I plan on acres of food....but time will tell just what plants I can get established and that will produce food.

In a SHTF situation I would want to feed anyone who is hungry. I will not be out there with a gun protecting my food crops....no, I will share. I will share my food with anyone...we are all in this together!

I will be concentrating on food that grows on trees, as they are a get them established, water them, and they will produce food for many years. I especially want to grow walnuts, fruit, berries like Mulberry, and any thing else that grows on trees....

Installing a Drip Irrigation System at Stony Oasis

I have finally found a drip system that I think will work well up there...after trying a soaker hose system (which quickly plugged because of minerals in the water) and a 1/4 inch line pre-made drippers which also quickly plugged.

I am now using the 1/2 in drip supply line, poking my own holes and pushing in an drip emitter. These seem to have a solid stream of water, and I do not think they will plug.

In the images above you can see some of these trees are struggling a bit because of lack of water...I will be installing my new drip on them next spring...as we are so close to winter it makes little sense to do it now...and my solar install is calling...

Learning Which Plants Love Life at Stony Oasis Farms

I am still kinda in the process of determining what plants I can grow up there in the mountains and what plants love growing up there. Any the jury is pretty much in agreement...I can grow just about anything there. I plan a big vegetable garden this next summer. I will not be able to eat everything I can grow, but I will go find neighbors who want some and either barter, or simply give the produce away. I can also simply feed the wildlife I share my neck of the woods with.

Here is a college of just some of the plants I have growing there now...

Finding and Collecting Seeds For Planting at Stony Oasis

Every fall I go on a few seed collecting trips. And, this year will be no different. When out gathering seeds I always look for a cultivar that is a stand-out for some reason. This year I can across a walnut tree that is growing wild right on the bank of the Columbia River. Check her out...

She is small...but loaded with walnuts...just the kind of tree I want to propagate...I would love to have 100 of these growing at Stony!

I am always on the lookout for cultivars like this! Walnuts are such good food...Here is what AI says about walnuts as a food source...

Walnuts are an exceptionally nutritious, calorie-dense superfood packed with healthy fats, antioxidants, and essential minerals.

I literally want 100 walnut trees all on drip irrigation littering the ground with thousands of walnuts every year! I will be getting several hundred walnuts from this tree and plant them all in pots in the propagation room I will be building there.

I will also be gathering seeds of maybe 50-100 other plants this year and see what I can get established up there. The sky is the limit, the more cultivars I get growing the better I will like it...I am aiming for diversity, and growing plants that are useful for me or other animals.

Walnuts harvested, and will be grown the spring of 2027.
