Integrating Cannabis into our Dryland Hugelkultur System at Stony Oasis Farms

Using the Dryland Hugelkultur For Massive Cannabis Growth
Developing my 80-acre off-grid homestead in central Washington is all about working with nature’s design. One of our major agricultural experiments this season is seeing how cannabis—a plant known for its heavy water and nutrient demands—behaves when grown in a rugged, dryland hugelkultur bed built right into the mountainside.
Our goal at Stony Oasis Farms is to prove that you don't need a massive city water hookup or heavy synthetic fertilizers to grow thriving, high-yielding crops in a high-desert climate. By combining permaculture principles, organic super soil, and natural companion planting, we are building a self-sustaining ecosystem.
In this week's featured update over on our sister site, Just Cannabis Seed, we take a close look at the mechanics of this bed during the hottest summer days.
We dive into:
- Natural Wind Mitigation: Why we chose to build a traditional wattle fence from wild-harvested materials to diffuse the mountain winds just a bit.
- Soil Biology & Companion Plants: How we are using Crimson Clover at the base of our plants to fix nitrogen directly into the root zones.
- Water & Moisture Retention: How the super soil and decaying wood buried inside our dryland hugelkultur beds is keeping these high-exposure plants "fat" and fully fed, as well as retaining water.
Whether you're looking to establish your own off-grid food forest, improve your homestead's soil, or you're just curious to see how our bare-root fruit trees and hugelkultur beds are holding up against the Washington heat, this week's progress report is packed with real-world data.
